Leading a Small Group Discussion

Overview of the sessions - Each week will cover 2 readings. The first few weeks, ask everyone to introduce themselves and, if comfortable, share why they wanted to be part of this discussion group. Open with prayer.

Plan to spend about 20-30 minutes for each of the two chapters, then another 30 minutes exploring the ideas in scripture. (See below for recommended format.) Close with prayer.

Chapter Summary and Discussion - The leader should summarize the chapter. This could be as simple as reading the chapter out loud (it’s short). OR say a few sentences summarizing each paragraph. Don’t be surprised if someone jumps in mid chapter. If so, encourage the discussion then return to the next paragraph. Read all questions at the end of the chapter and then ask people to share their thoughts on one or more questions. If people get off-track, ask a question to return to the chapter topic.

Scripture story - Ask people to think about the ideas you have discussed today as you read a story from scripture. After reading, ask how the scripture relates to the chapter topic. If you need to prime the conversation, you can ask questions like: How did characters in the story impact one another? Who was non-anxious, and what was their effect on others? What triangles do you notice? Are there other warning signs that someone is anxious? When have you been in a similar situation?

Lectio Divina - (this is an abbreviated form). Tell people you will read scripture 3 times and pause between each reading. During the pause, think about what you heard in the scripture but remain silent. Invite people to get comfortable. They may want to close their eyes. Relax their shoulders and hands. After 3 readings, and 3 pauses, ask people what spoke to them as they listened. Use questions like:

What is a word or phrase the Holy Spirit impressed on you as you listened to the scripture? How does the scripture relate to a specific situation in your life? What is Christ's personal invitation to you from the Scripture?
